Radio Operation Courses

There are two radio operator's licences for commercial seafarers approved within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. These are the Restricted Operator's Certificate (ROC) for vessels operating within VHF range of coastguard stations and the General Operator's Certificate (GOC) for any vessels operating beyond this range.

There are two other radio qualifications available, the Short Range Certificate (SRC) and the Long Range Certificate (LRC). These are essentially leisure qualifications but mariners in some sectors may have dispensation to operate using these licences. Seafarers should be aware that candidates are normally trained on different specifications of equipment and anyone operating commercially on an SRC or LRC should consider upgrading to the ROC or the GOC accordingly.
