Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
The aim of the ECDIS course is to train Bridge Watchkeeping Officers and other interested personnel in the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems.
The essential legal and theoretical background to the use and carriage of ECDIS is covered in sufficient detail to allow the student to use the systems correctly and safely.
It meets the requirements laid down in Regulation II/1 and II/2 of the STCW 2010 Manila Amendment (Revised 2012 Edition) and table A1-II/1 and A-II/2 of the STCW Code.
Pre- Course Requirements
Basic computer skills
The course will focus on the following topics:
- Legal aspects and requirements
- Main types of electronic charts
- ECDIS data
- Presentation of data
- Basic navigational functions
- Special functions for route planning
- Special functions for route monitoring
- Additional navigational functions and indications
- Errors in displayed data
- Errors of interpretation
- Status information, warnings and alarms
- Voyage documentation
- System integrity monitoring
- ECDIS back-up
- Dangers of over-reliance on ECDIS
ECDIS training takes place on our TRANSAS full mission bridge simulator. It follows the recommendations of IMO Model Course 1.27 and concentrates on the safe and efficient use of ECDIS at sea in a variety of conditions, from ocean passages to pilotage.
In addition, practical exercises using desktop simulators reinforce the theory and provide an opportunity to develop and practice responses to emergency situations and use reversionary modes, including loss of GPS signal.
Assessment and Certification
Successful completion of this course will result in the issue of STCW certification for generic ECDIS training (to IMO 1.27)
