Master 200 / OOW 500 Oral Exam Preparation

The MCA Master 200 Certificate of Competancy is a requirement for coded vessels up to 200 Gross Tonnes of unrestricted length, it also allows holders to operate as an Officer of the watch on vessels up to 500 tonnes. There are two versions, Limited and Unlimited.
Candidates holding an RYA/IYT Yachtmaster Offshore with the appropriate shorebased certificate can apply for a Master 200 CoC which is Limited to 150 miles offshore. Unlimited candidates are required to hold an RYA/IYT Yachtmaster Ocean with the associated shorebased certificate.
Anyone wishing to achieve the Master 200 must first apply to the MCA for a Notice of Eligibility (NOE) before they can receive an exam date. The Master 200 Oral preparation is taught by one of our senior instructors with an exceptional record of successfully preparing candidates for oral exams at every level.
The course starts with a mock oral exam for each candidate, to identify individual strengths and weaknesses, consequently the maximum number on the course is 4 candidates. The aspects of the Master 200 syllabus covered during the week are determined by the result of these mock orals. As well as teaching the syllabus our instructor will emphasise exam technique and offer advice on how to answer questions using real examples.
There are no formal requirements for attending the Master 200 Oral Prep Course but candidates should have a good level of understanding and ability in all subject areas.
This said, however, it is recommended that candidates have all the qualifications required for their NOE before taking the prep course, these are as follows;

- Navigation - traditional and electronic
- Sextant use

- Watchkeeping and watch handover

- Pollution - prevention, reporting and limitation
- Crew - safe manning, hours of work and agreements
- Emergency Procedures
This is an instructor led program using classroom teaching and practical sessions to ensure that candidates are up to the required standard for an MCA Oral Examination.
