Please note: We run this course in our training room on the New Fish Quay in Brixham.
This course is a component of the forthcoming MCA Under 16.5 metre Skipper’s Ticket and covers chartwork, navigation and signals. Successful completion of this course will go towards the overall requirements of the Under 16.5 metre Ticket certificate. Holders of this certificate can also keep watch on larger vessels. Course Aim: To provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for competent Watchkeeping.
On completion of this course you should be able to: Explain the principles of Watchkeeping – Understand the rules of the road – Explain principles of safe navigation Explain the uses and limitations of electronic navigational aids. Explain the IALA buoyage system Understand lights, shapes and sounds in navigation Understand vessel emergency procedures. On completion of this course you will be able to use charts to accurately: Find positions (Latitude. and Longitude. Use scales and chart data – Use manual position fixing methods – Use compass bearings and transits – Determine course considerations (tide, leeway, set and drift) – Determine water and ground tracks Estimate positions with course made good – Estimate positions with speed made good
